Abstract Objectives Iris germanica L. is a medicinal plant, which has long history of uses, mainly in medieval Persia and many places worldwide for the management wide variety diseases. In this study, we aimed to review ethnopharmacological applications addition phytochemical pharmacological properties I. germanica. Key findings Ethnomedical uses have been reported from countries such as China, Pakistan, India, Iran Turkey. The part rhizome roots. Based on investigations, different bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, triterpenes, sterols, phenolics, ceramides benzoquinones, identified its parts. Current studies represent that plant possesses several biological therapeutic effects, neuroprotective, hypoglycaemic, hypolipidaemic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antiplasmodial, antifungal, immunomodulatory, cytotoxic antimutagenic effects. Summary Although majority preclinical various activities however, sufficient clinical trials are not currently available.
